L'histoire se passe à Cuba au début des années 50. Santiago, un vieux pécheur rentre à nouveau bredouille. Cela fait déjà 84 jours qu'il n'a rien pris. La malchance le poursuit, tout le monde pense qu'il n'est plus bon à rien. Seul un jeune garçon, Manolin, continue de croire en lui, en dépit des commentaires désobligeants de ses parents. Le 85e jour, Santiago décide de pêcher loin dans le golfe pour trouver le poisson qui lui ramènera l'estime de tous. Il rencontre alors un marlin. La lutte entre le vieil homme et le poisson durera trois jours et trois nuits. Des journées épuisantes où le vieil homme et le poisson devront également lutter contre des requins. Quand il rentrera au port, épuisé, Santiago aura également retrouvé sa dignité. En collant au plus près du texte d'Hemingway, Thierry Murat a réussi une des meilleures adaptations littéraires en bande dessinée de ces dernières années. Son graphisme transcende le texte de l'écrivain américain, tout en respectant son style et le rythme du récit.
